Space Travel
Speeding faster than light,
Planets and satellites blur completely
Amidst the black nothingness,
Creating a pocket through time,
Escaping into the depths of space.

Tirelessly, we journey on,
Riding space-time
As we venture in our spaceship,
Velocity a universal constant,
Each moment in solitary comfort
Lingering between us.

Takeoff
You look at me and give a smile,
for we have traveled quite awhile
in this spaceship, faster than light;
you give the lead, I guide the flight.

I take the yoke so nervously,
afraid that I am not ready
as we zoom quickly out of sight;
you give the lead, I guide the flight.

You see that I am insecure,
but me you softly reassure:
To tour the stars is my birthright;
you give the lead, I guide the flight.

Launch
Onto the launch pad, we ascend; trembling heartbeats hastening,
our virgin voyage into space, the experience exciting;
both of us timid, to be sure, the future simply frightening,
we do not know where it will lead, anticipation heightening.

You reach for my hand with your own, offering yourself cautiously,
unsure whether I will accept, so you hold your breath quietly—
insecurities swallowed down, you linger for me patiently…
I let your hand take hold of mine, give myself to you willingly.

I let you guide me to the steps, we beginning our ascension:
Hands grasping firmly to the rungs, climb through the cockpit extension,
initiating protocol, blastoff in skyward direction—
Our cosmic journey beginning, to enter a new dimension.

Into the Unknown
Excitement builds in hearts each time
as through the atmosphere we climb,
experience becomes sublime
at craft liftoff;
we fly this ship throughout space-time
as we blast off.

And carefully you navigate
as two crewmembers concentrate
on readouts while eyes gravitate
to satellites,
planets that simply fascinate,
polarized lights.

We pass stars that have long burned out,
they drifting aimlessly about
the void of space and all throughout…
We chase comets
along this interstellar route
for space cadets.

The Final Countdown
Along the halls, footsteps racing,
praying that it’s not too late—
Heartbeats pounding, fright resounding
in an effort to escape.

Alarms blaring, strobe lights flashing,
frightened figures rush the gate,
defense grids breached, warcraft nearing—
praying that it’s not too late.

Breach the hangar, ship hijacking
everything is at stake—
Ignite engines, take off flying
in an effort to escape.

Starship distance starts increasing
from home world and crafts descending
in an effort to escape,
praying that it’s not too late.

Homeward Bound
Silently, the void of space slips past us,
our journey prolonged aboard this vessel.
Drawn to your eyes watch with fascination
as celestial bodies traverse by,
the sincerest of smiles graces my lips,
seeing the stars embedded in your eyes,
those dazzling lights you could never see.

Grasping to the yoke tighter with my hands,
I refocus my thoughts to future plans
while the two of us remain in silence,
a comforting warmth amidst ship readouts,
pulsing lights on screens, and energy boards.
Spending forever in moments like this…
the void of space shall never be lonely.

My darling, you were worth all of the risks
that this space odyssey has brought upon
this hopeless romantic in these stiff bones
once too afraid to fly from his homeworld.
My excitement builds the closer we near
my planet—our final destination—
I finally able to bring you home.

A collection of six poems written for the lovely :iconmagicaljoey:'s Anthology Contest II.  I did intend to write more than the minimum, but time got away from me...

Day 1's prompt of A Little Prompt-y Goodness II for NaPoWriMo gave me the idea that I wanted to write about space travel as the central theme for this little anthology.  I love outer space and the idea of traveling among it, so this was a fun idea to build poetry from.  With Space Odyssey, I wanted to explore various emotional states that can be present in the circumstances leading to space travel--excitement, fear, loneliness, isolation, wonder, etc.  The poems were also fashioned with multiple levels of meaning to them--from companionship and romance, growth and taking/relinquishing control, wonderment and the quest for knowledge/exploration, escaping horrid circumstances with hopes of a better future, stepping out of one's comfort zone, and finding where one belongs.

For Space Odyssey, I also wanted to pick poetic forms to help encompass the underlying themes and emotions for the different works.  In the end, I used several traditionally established forms, created a form of my own, and then concluded with a structured free verse.  The Acrostic as the first poem was meant to set the theme of space travel with the spell-out and I liked how it could easily be used to develop a disjointed, isolated feeling.  The Kyrielle had a refrain that was soft and easily felt motivational and warm, which was a nice way to explore growth and the dynamics of control.  I mentioned it in the individual poem submission, but the Dabali Shairi, for the English language, just exudes a sensuous quality to it, so it was naturally the choice for the underlying romantic themes.  The Burns Stanza I wanted for the overt use of rhyme and I think it worked well expressing a quest for knowledge and exploration.  The Villanette was designed specifically in mind to cause a feeling of dread with two lines refraining over and over, like a dreaded drumbeat slowly accelerating and I simply couldn't find a form that encompassed it in a way that I could meld the developing poem for, but my experience with the Villanelle made me gravitate toward making a deviation of that form.  The final poem, after some attempts to find a traditional form, I relinquished to the artistic powers that be and went with a free verse poem, though syllable count and stanza length were crafted while the individual telling the tale expressed his inner thoughts concerning his newfound bravery to embrace love and the happiness he had nearly given up on.  Since few people think in structure and rhyme, I guess it was fitting this one was the free verse form.  I also really like that this poem is the one that concludes the anthology with its undercurrents of hope for the future.  I hope you enjoy!

The individual poems:
1. Space Travel (Acrostic)
2. Takeoff (Kyrielle)
3. Launch (Dabali Shairi)
4. Into the Unknown (Burns Stanza)
5. The Final Countdown (Villanette)
6. Homeward Bound (Free Verse)
