Literature Text

The staleness of today
blends in with tomorrow,
stirring another wave
of melancholic sorrow.

The pain soon sets in
and answers are slowly lost
to the thief of time
while I pay the terrible cost.

Too many nights, I cry myself to sleep,
bound by the secrets I am forced to keep.
The price to live has become so steep
as the societal poison soaks in deep.

Just maybe, the pain will soon go away,
as so often, I pray for sweet relief,
or that you might finally come into my life,
so I hold onto that precious last belief.

Spinning my wheels in the mud,
stuck in the same occupational hole,
stealing my life for corporate greed,
preventing me from becoming whole.

Too many nights, I cry myself to sleep,
bound by the secrets I am forced to keep.
The price to live has become so steep
as the societal poison soaks in deep.

I just want to find
the place where I belong
with you by my side to hear
the melody of my soul’s song.

As it plays for you…
and only you…

So many nights, I cry myself to sleep,
bound by these secrets I am forced to keep
for the price to live has become too steep
and the societal poison has soaked in deep.

So many nights, I cry myself to sleep,
bound by these secrets that I still keep.

My Ballad revealing my soul for A Little Prompt-y Goodness II hosted by :iconourdreamswillcome: for NaPoWriMo 2017.  Meh...

A Ballad is a form of Lyric poem that is a narrative and the poet is the storyteller, usually expressing their emotions through the poem.  Stanzaic by nature, it is generally comprised of unlimited quatrains and usually rhymed in abab or xaxa fashion, where x's represent non-rhymed lines.  Often, they are composed of alternating iambic meter, the odd lines in tetrameter and the even lines in trimeter.  The subject of the poem focuses on a single, crucial episode, the stanzas themselves frequently focused on individual moments strung together and don't necessarily supply links between the stanzas.  Dramatic in fashion, the content is shown rather than told.

Whenever I attempt to write lyrics without a poetic form structure in mind, I fall onto the Ballad and modify it to suit my needs and make it song-like.  In this case, I did not follow any meter scheme and just went for a natural flow, but employed a rhyme scheme of xaxa in the verses and monorhyme in the refrain.  The bridge breaks the quatrain structure intentionally while I mirror the refrain in the outro.

An engaging read, and I thought the lines: "I just want to find / the place where I belong / with you by my side to hear / the melody of my soul’s song." were especially pretty. :aww:
