It may be better to measure the age of a tree
by counting the rings it adds through the years.
The only problem is that one must take its life
in order to open it up, by cutting it down.

My Qataa for the 2017 Middle Eastern March hosted by :iconprojectdfc:.  I was trying to find something profound to write about with this form, as the first two I've written seemed to have more depth to them, and I remembered this bit I had heard about the best way to deduce a tree's age.  I know you can core them and count, but the first thought that had come to me was that you had to chop it down in order to see its rings to count, so by seeking to know the length of life, you had to kill it.  It poses as a nice metaphor if nothing else.

The Qataa is a quatrain comprised of two complete sentences in the form of couplets that share the same subject matter.  There is no meter, rhyme, or syllable count, but the sentences are balanced.  There's a natural pause between the two lines of each couplet.  Of each couplet, the first line generally explores an idea while the second line brings a twist or surprise to the mix.
